What is roofline uPVC?

Fascia, Soffit and Guttering

At some point in your life, you are likely to be told that your ‘fascias and soffits’ need replacing. OK… but what are they? What is a box end and bargeboard? Why does a building need them?

And why do you have to spend time and money maintaining, repairing, replacing or upgrading them?

Fascia

A fascia is the long, straight board that is mounted under a building’s roof edge. The fascia board is fixed to the roof trusses and not only supports all of the guttering, but the bottom row of your roof’s tiles at the same time.

Therefore, it is important that your fascia remains in good condition to be able to cope with sudden downpours – gallons of water per second can fall into your gutters, putting great pressure on your fascia boards.

Soffit

The soffit board is the finished surface that is fixed underneath the fascia. The soffit is the part you can usually see if you look up towards your roof from the street.

Your soffits will need to be ventilated so that air can flow into the roof area unless ventilation has already been provided over the top of the fascia. Otherwise you may end up with condensation, which, left unchecked, can lead to timber decay in your roof’s joists.

Box End

The box end neatly covers the various angles, heights and planes of the fascias, soffits and bargeboards at each corner of your property’s gable end.

Bargeboard

The bargeboard is used on the gable end of a house, connected to the box end. It is purely decorative and if designed correctly, can really add aesthetic appeal to a property.

Put together, these components make up your building’s roofline. Most of the time, they are made out of timber. But when exposed to the elements – rain and shine – all year round, your fascia boards, soffits and any wall cladding can be expensive and time consuming to maintain.
