All I want for Christmas is a new flat roof!

A new flat roof for Christmas!

It does look as if it will remain bright and sunny despite the sub-zero temperatures. But it is a good reminder that the warm weather is likely to be well and truly over for the next few months. Apparently we are in the start of the ‘meteorological winter’ (no, we weren’t aware of the term either), so it’s definitely time to dig out the hats, scarves and gloves if you haven’t already done so.

So what does the winter mean for your home? Well, you’re a hardier soul than us if you haven’t yet turned on the heating! Pipes need to be protected – so if you’ve been putting off lagging until now, please don’t delay a minute longer! Your house probably also looks like a launderette as it becomes more difficult to dry your clothes.

And if you’re really unlucky, you’ve recently noticed a wet patch on the ceiling below your flat roof.

Sadly, if you have a felt flat roof, there will always come a time when it fails. Traditional flat roofs may be cheaper than the modern PVC alternatives, but there is a very good reason for this. Over time, the felt degrades. And it could be in as little as ten years.

Sun, rain, snow, ice, wind, algae, moss… they can all be damaging, leaving you with a brittle, cracked flat roof that leaks every time it rains or the snow melts. Plus snow is heavy and your flat felt roof will not have been designed to cope with such a weight. Heavy snowfall could actually lead to the total collapse of an ageing roof.

Even humans can have a negative effect on a felt flat roof. Roofs need maintenance, but can be easily damaged by people trying to clean or fix them. Sometimes it feels like a double-edged sword – should you leave it alone to slowly fail or try to solve the problem and potentially do more harm than good?

Sometimes, rather than put off the inevitable, it is better to just cut your losses and upgrade.

After all, there are many countries that are far colder than the UK and have flat roofs. Simply put, your roof will perform well for a very long time as long as you choose a high quality roofing product and a reputable installer.
