Make Sure Your Roof Lead is Protected from Thieves

Lead theft from roofs

The theft of lead from roofs is a problem which has increased dramatically over recent years as the value of metal soared.

Commercial premises, schools and domestic dwellings are frequent victims although churches are among the hardest hit.

The problem not only causes great inconvenience to its victims but also can cost thousands of pounds in higher insurance premiums, especially if you’re a repeat target.

There are, however, a number of security measures you can take to reduce the chance of you becoming victim to lead theft.

By taking a view simple, cost-effective security steps around your property you can deter thieves. The following list offers advice to homeowners and commercial businesses to protect themselves against this crime.

  1. Lock gates to prevent vehicles from entering your premises or people walking through easily.
  2. Ensure thieves do not have easy access to your roof by removing items such as water butts, waste bins, and ladders from the immediate vicinity. Ensure ladders and other equipment which can be used as a climbing tool are locked away in a shed.
  3. Apply anti-climb paint to drain pipes and roof guttering to make it as difficult as possible for potential thieves to climb onto the roof. Ensure you only use it on piping over 2m, however, and warning notices should always be used.
  4. Erect prominent warning signs that CCTV is in operation and thieves will be prosecuted. If your home or business is part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, ensure this is displayed clearly.
  5. If you haven’t done so already, consider installing additional security such as lighting, sensors, security cameras and intruder alarms.
  6. Introduce yourself to neighbours and highlight your concerns. Provide your contact details so that if any of them notice suspicious activity, you can be alerted promptly.
  7. For those who are persistently targeted by lead roof thieves, consider using Smart Water – a special liquid DNA that marks lead and other valuables and leaves a trace on the thief which can be detected by police – so that offenders can be prosecuted. The use of this material can reduce insurance premiums in some circumstances.
  8. Report all roof lead thefts to the police so they can issue warnings for the area and help catch who‘s responsible.
